This SoftBank-backed startup just launched smart glasses that enable surgeons to virtually observe and advise on procedures across the world

The startup has secured $140 million from investing giants like SoftBank and Mubadala.

The practicing surgeon is the founder of Proximie, an augmented reality startup that enables healthcare professionals to observe and advise on surgeries virtually. The company has won over investors with its promise to vastly improve patient outcomes by enabling surgeons to share the most cutting-edge expertise remotely. To date, Proximie's tech has largely been focused on a screen present in the operating room but now the company has just launched an AR headset to give onlookers an even more detailed picture of the procedure.

The PxLens records a live video that is fed to connected participants who can observe in real-time. Participants watching can then add things like AR annotations — which include notes, diagrams, and suggestions that are displayed on a separate screen — to assist the surgeon, offer guidance, or ask questions. Video feeds from robots and other imaging devices can also be fed into the company's wider telepresence platform.

The glasses are compatible with any device, as they connect to Proximie's software platform, which can be accessed via phones, laptops, computers, and feeds in operating rooms, which makes the product easier to integrate into operating rooms globally. Pilot programs were conducted in the UK and the US in November 2022, with the device being used across orthopedics to plastic surgery.

The initial development of the PxLens, which has now been patented, took a"lot of time in the planning phase," Hachach-Haram said. But understanding the different market dynamics and what would work for a surgeon's day-to-day pushed the team to develop software that would make for an easier use case. Proximie raised an $83 million Series C round in June 2022.
