Hong Kong's first protest in about two years goes ahead under strict rules including a cap on the number of participants and a requirement that everyone wear an identifying number tag
First authorised protest since the lifting of Covid restrictions went ahead in China's self-governing territory under watch by police, who required organisers to cap the number of participants at 100.
In mid-2020 Beijing imposed a National Security Law to stamp out dissent in the self-governing southern Chinese city, which had been rocked by pro-democracy unrest. Officers closely examined banners and placards for "politically sensitive and seditious words", said protest organiser Cyrus Chan."I am here to join a march, not a shame parade," said the retired civil servant, who did not wish to be identified."Now even trying to take a breath of fresh air may endanger national security."
