An eruption of violence between warring gangs in an Ecuadorian prison has left at least 44 dead.
The government has deployed thousands of troops to take on drug cartels amid the country’s rising murder rate and prison disorder Fighting broke out after one inmate burst out of his cell to attack a rival in a facility 45 miles west of the capital city.
Authorities said 220 prisoners had escaped during the disorder, with around half of them still on the run. Cocaine produced in Peru and Colombia is smuggled through Ecuador on its journey to the US border, a lucrative markets for gangs. Last month, Mr Lasso said a state of emergency in three states would see ‘perimeter controls, special operations, and proactive investigation’.
