Auburn’s trio of returning running backs are confident in each other to do whatever, whenever.
Thanks to a largely retooled — and likely largely improved — wide receiver room, the buzz surrounding Auburn’s running back room has been minimal at best.especially considering the Tigers boast the SEC’s leading returning rusher in senior Jarquez Hunter, who rushed for 909 yards and seven touchdowns in 2023.
Joining Hunter in Auburn’s running back room are another pair of returners in junior Damari Alston and sophomore Jeremiah Cobb — two guys who are expected to plenty of reps in 2024. “Not that he didn’t before, but man, he’s starting to look like an SEC running back,” Freeze said of Cobb. “He’s bigger, stronger, probably faster.”
“That’s a big deal in our game and what we do in the running back room. We’ve got to protect the quarterback,” Hunter said. “I think all of us can go from the backfield to the receiver spot. We can do what the tight ends can do. All of us can do all of the positions coach asks us to do and we can do it pretty well,” said Hunter.
Meanwhile, when asked which of Auburn’s backs are the best at catching the football, Nix couldn’t come up with for-sure answer. However, he knew which player would“If you asked today, Jarquez would say he is. Cobb is probably right up there, too. has been working on it. If you asked Jarquez, he’s going to probably jump up first and say he’s the best,” Nix joked.
