The president's decision came only hours after UAW President Shawn Fain ramped up pressure with a public invitation to Biden.
Six of the states with parts distribution plants – Michigan, Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, Nevada, North Carolina and Georgia – are expected to be election battlegrounds next year.Biden, who has referred to himself as “the most pro-union president in American history,” has long supported organized labor. But his push for a transition to electric vehicles has put him at odds with the 150,000-member union because EVs require fewer workers to produce.
Biden has few tools to force the parties to reach an agreement. Unlike last year’s freight-rail negotiation, Biden cannot legally intervene and impose a contract to get workers back on the job.Republicans also had been pushing for Biden to visit Michigan so they could use the opportunity to argue the administration’s pro-EV policies are to blame for workers’ frustrations.
