Students at Frank Fowler Dow School No. 52 received a valuable lesson in fire safety Thursday.
That's the character those staff members bring to life in the classroom, teaching kids how to stay safe, remain calm, and get low in the event of a home fire.
"You got to stay below the smoke," one instructor explained to students. "Does it feel good to breathe in smoke? No, it does not, and it's really not good for you, so you want to stay low so you don't get caught in the smoke."One of my favorite things about it is the kids get good practice of how to get out of a building," explained Julia Buttitta, a staff member at Red Cross.
It's an adventure in the classroom, and a lesson one hopes they will never need, but if they do, one that may help them survive — all because they had the chance to "Prepare with Pedro." The Red Cross is anxious to share these fire safety programs with community organizations such as schools, churches and scout troops.
