The recipe for a Wild West road trip:
The vintage Dodge Power Wagon rumbles down the highway on massive 37-inch tires. The steering feels tighter than it has any right to, given the rig’s age. The view—a commanding perspective humbled by the spectacular rural Wyoming landscape we’re witnessing—comes via a steeply vertical windshield, which provides a clean line of sight not just to the terrain, but to the front headlights and fenders, as well.
My fondest vision, though: A life in the American west, circa 1955 or so. Wide open spaces, a pace still determined more by the rhythms of the natural world than our own surly expectations, and absent the myriad complexities and hassles of modern life while still having at least a hint of quickly modernizing technology.
With targets placed at mile-long distances—or 1,760 yards—Nomad’s range isn’t a typical shooting range. Instead it consists of a large tent set up at the base of one hill, complete with catering for the attendees, with targets placed at intervals leading up to the longest. They had added an even further target, at 2,175 yards, or 1.25 miles, a few weeks before I arrived—a distance owner Shepard Humphries estimates fewer than 1,000 people have ever hit.
