The three-day rock and heavy metal event wrapped up at the Empire Polo Club in Indio on Sunday, Oct. 8.
“How’s everybody doing,” Metallica vocalist James Hetfield asked the crowd, which seemed to swell to maximum capacity on Sunday as there was a sea of fans in black shirts — mostly Metallica shirts — as far as the eye could see.
“Fade to Black” was up next. It’s the band’s first power ballad, and the group continues to highlight the song as it’s about suicide and mental health.Ohana 2023: See photos of The Killers, Eddie Vedder, Foo Fighters and more The guys powered through a crushing “Sad But True,” “The Day That Never Comes” and “Hardwired” before a three-song encore that included “Seek & Destroy,” “One” and the closer, “Master of Puppets.”
The band vibrated the entire venue coming out with “Jambi,” before slipping into “The Pot” and jamming through one of its latest songs, the 10-minute “Fear Inoculum.” For that song, we sat down on the grass in the pit. My friend described it as like being in a sound bath, which was spot on: a transcendental moment in the desert, under a blanket of stars.
