Several states have been plunged into darkness on Memorial Day, with more than 190,000 residents or businesses without power in Kentucky alone.
The deadly tornadoes that pummeled swathes of the U.S. at the weekend have left hundreds of thousands of Americans without power.Analysis by PowerOutage.us, a website created to monitor energy access across the country, suggested that 11 states had been left grappling with blackouts on Memorial Day. Kentucky has been the worst hit, with more than 190,000 residents or businesses without power early Monday, according to the site, although other states have also been badly affected.
A further six states had more than 10,000 people who had lost power in their homes or businesses: Illinois , Indiana , Tennessee , Georgia , Virginia , and North Carolina .The outages themselves have already claimed at least one life.Speaking at a press conference on Sunday night, Arkansas Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders said her state had seen at least eight storm-related deaths, including a patient who died when the machine keeping them alive stopped working as the power went out.
