Excitement surrounding the Pirates is what Texas high school football is all about.
POTH — The reality will probably set in when the bus pulls into the parking lot at AT&T Stadium on Thursday.“It’s the pinnacle of Texas high school football,” junior center/defensive end Luke Rodgers said. “It’s what you work toward, so thinking that we’re going to be there and that’s us that’s going to be on the field, that’s just crazy.”
1993 Poth graduate Jeff Luna returned to his alma mater in 2016 after spending four seasons as the head coach at Floresville, which is just one town over on U.S. Highway 181. Luna was happy to get back to a sense of normalcy during Monday’s practice. After the Pirates defeated Gilmer Harmony 51-28 in Friday’s state semifinal in Cypress, Luna fielded scores of calls and congratulatory texts. He spent Saturday making travel arrangements. On Sunday, he and his staff began breaking down video on Gunter.
Poth faces a program with state-championship pedigree. The Tigers have been in the state finals in four of the last seven seasons, including three of the last four. The Tigers lost to Franklin 49-35 in last year’s state final. They defeated Omaha Paul Pewitt 43-22 for the 2020 crown. Gunter also won it all in 2016.“The fire put under some of us who were returning helped motivate us just to be great like they were,” junior safety/receiver Gabriel Silansky said of Franklin.
