Portion of Beltway 8 near Interstate 45 to close for four months
Roadway repairs will close a southeast stretch of Beltway 8 near Interstate 45 for four months, beginning May 8, state highway officials said.
The segment will be closed westbound from Texas 3 to near Beamer Road, through Aug. 31, according to the Texas Department of Transportation. Connections to I-45 from Beltway 8 will remain open, but the entrances to the beltway from Texas 3 — also known as Old Galveston Road — Genoa Red Bluff and Crenshaw will be closed.
Traffic will be diverted off the main lanes and onto the frontage roads at Texas 3. Drivers then can use the frontage road to find their way west of I-45 and re-enter the main freeway lanes at Beamer.Typically, Beltway 8 acts as the frontage road for the Sam Houston Tollway, but in some segments the beltway is itself the center freeway, notably in the southeast area near I-45 and between I-45 and Interstate 69 near Bush Intercontinental Airport.
The Sam Houston Tollway will remain open, with the closing only affecting the part that is Beltway 8, said Roxana Sibrian, spokeswoman for the Harris County Toll Road Authority. The closing is needed to make “emergency spot repairs,” particularly in the area around the Sabo Road exit from westbound Beltway 8, officials said. The proximity of I-45 makes closures and traffic control in the area complex.
