A new Pew Research Center report delves into how politics and social media intersect.

The top reason people use Facebook, 93%, is to keep up with friends and family. Over 80% on Instagram also say that.The Pew Research Center asked social media users why they post about politics. Between 19% and 23% of users on each of the four platforms say the political content they see leans liberal.About 30% of X users say the content they see doesn’t lean either way, as do between 21% and 24% of users on the other three platforms.

Social media can provide more information about issues and give politicians the opportunity to speak directly to voters.But social media can also feed into partisan splits by creating “filter bubbles ... they can choose sources and stories that reinforce their preexisting beliefs,” Selepak said.
