Several patrol cars were seen surrounding the gate near 3rd Street and Alameda Boulevard at around 10:30 p.m. Base spokesperson Kevin Dixon said guards at the gate"engaged" a driver who went through the gate and didn't stop, referring to the vehicle as a"gate runner," but offered no further details. That driver was taken into custody, according to Dixon.
The base was put on lockdown and multiple gates for Naval Air Station North Island were closed while security personnel checked the rest of the base, Dixon said.Sign up for NBC San Diego newsletters."I was actually asleep when the car went through the intersection. I woke up to close to 20 gunshots being fired. I didn't know what it was at first. I looked out the window, saw a bunch of sirens going off and came down to see what it was all about," the witness said.
