Kennedy's hired private security, Gavin de Becker & Associates, discovered the man on the second floor of the residence and detained him until Los Angeles police arrived. The man allegedly asked to see Kennedy. Police cited him with trespassing and released him.Then, according to GDBA, the man, later identified as Jonathan Macht, 28,"immediately returned to Kennedy's residence" and was subsequently arrested.
"GDBA had notified the Secret Service about this specific obsessed individual several times in recent months and shared alarming communications he has sent to the candidate," Kennedy's campaign wrote in a statement."Over several months, the campaign submitted formal requests for Secret Service protection, yet U.S. Department of Homeland Security Sec. Alejandro Mayorkas has refused to approve the protection.
While the 2024 election is more than a year away, in its third request to the Homeland Security Department on Wednesday, GDBA noted that Edward Kennedy, a cousin to RFK Jr., received Secret Service protection 441 days ahead of the 1980 election. At the point that protection was granted him, Edward Kennedy had not announced his campaign for president.
Three years later, Secret Service protection would also be offered to the Rev. Jesse Jackson some 362 days ahead of the 1984 presidential election and would be done so again ahead of the 1988 election. Other examples of those who received protection include Bill Clinton, John Kerry, and Pat Robertson.GDBA's previous request on behalf of RFK Jr. was denied in July.
In the meantime, GDBA will continue to serve as RFK Jr.'s security detail. This incident was the first time the 2024 hopeful acknowledged the group by name, who, besides providing security, has also donated $4.5 million to a pro-Kennedy Super PAC. Macht remains in police custody on $30,000 bail.
