“It wasn’t a bad experience,” she said. “It was just very painful. It was just a long labor the last time with my older girl ... I didn’t think I had it in me to do it again.” “The nurses were watching me. I really wasn’t making progression, but I was still having contractions,” she said. “Eventually, she asked, ‘Well, do you have somebody to look after if you go home?’ I said well, he’s on his way.”

“Meanwhile, the contractions were just getting more and more and more intense, until finally, I just felt just — I can’t even describe it ... it just was a pain that was everywhere. It was just everywhere, from my back to my bottom.” “Right when I didn’t have the strength to keep trying to keep her alive, that’s when everybody came to my rescue at the same moment,” she said. “Just when I couldn’t do it, here comes Anchorage firefighters. All of them bust into my room.”“He cut her umbilical cord, and I’m still trying to track where she’s going,” she explained. “He’s like, no, they’re going to take care of her. I’ve got you.”

Fast forward one year and both mom and baby are doing great. Cameron celebrated her first birthday on Sunday and was able to reunite with the crew who saved her.“I just remember his eyes and his kind of demeanor, and he still had the same eyes and his demeanor,” she remembered. “I remember the two that definitely took her out of my arms, because, you know, I watched them like a hawk, even though, in my panic and everything I was going through, so I did recognize them.

Her story does have a sad note. While she appreciates the firefighters and their efforts, she’s still hurt by the hospital’s decision to send her home while in labor.
