that Brian Horton, who was the creative director of Marvel’s Wolverine , a PlayStation exclusive made by Insomniac, is now the creative director of Perfect Dark , over at Xbox , being made by new studio The Initiative.
Horton, though previously directing Wolverine, has not been on the project since this past summer, Totilo’s report says, and instead the new creative director is Marcus Smith, with Mike Daly being game director. This is a duo that had the same roles for the well-received Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart, another Insomniac title.
The change is due to “creative decisions” with the game, apparently, and Horton, previously the Miles Morales director, is gone. Sony is issuing no official comment on the reasoning here. Perfect Dark recently had a solid looking trailer at an Xbox showcase, and has been developed by a combination of The Initiative and Crystal Dynamics pitching in for years now. Its debut did not give a release window, so it’s expected the game will not be out until 2026 at the earliest. Perfect Dark was first announced in 2020 at the Game Awards, another example of just how long these AAA game dev cycles are these days.
We are now living in an odd era where console exclusivity is less of a thing, so we’ll see what happens here. Microsoft instantly releases its exclusives on Game Pass and PC, but now offers some games to PlayStation either immediately or on a time delay. We don’t know if that will happen with Perfect Dark. Sony is now releasing games on PC faster and faster and it too has now started talking about getting its game on more platforms, though what that means remains to be seen.
