Catalina Island Conservancy will use other ways to control deer who destroy native vegetation.
Deer are seen on Catalina Island in 2016. The Catalina Island Conservancy had asked for a permit to kill the mule deer on the island using sharpshooters in helicopters. They say the deer are destroying native plants and causing environmental damage. After opposition from residents and the L.A. County Board of Supervisors , the Conservancy said it was dropping the plan to kill the deer via helicopters on Wednesday, May 29, 2024. Other means would be considered.
But after the killing method was made public, it unleashed criticism from many residents as well as a unanimous rebuke from the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors last month. The conservancy also phoned Hahn to personally inform the supervisor that the aerial shooting program was no longer an option.
The CDFW had received an application for the conservancy’s habitat restoration plan, which included the aerial killing of the deer, in October 2023. But the agency had not yet OK’d the application. Dennhardt said in news reports she expected the program to begin later this year.
