The Pittsburgh Steelers will reap the rewards from Cam Heyward's extension on their salary cap.
than just keeping their defensive captain for another two seasons. Pittsburgh will save a massive amount on their salary cap, which wasAll in all, Gerry Dulac of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports that the new deal, which will pay Heyward $45 million over the next three years with $16 million guaranteed, will save the Steelers $9 million on the salary cap.
Pittsburgh has many expiring contracts it could look to extend past the 2024 season. For one, the Steelers could extend Najee Harris or Jaylen Warren, but Freiermuth seems like the likeliest player to reap the benefits of the deal. Before the extension, the Steelers had a little over $8 million in cap space, but they could now double that. With more extensions coming, it does seem like getting Heyward was necessary.
Heyward is the oldest player to receive such a massive contract at 35 years old, a record-setting contract in NFL history. He will be set up next to Keeanu Benton and Larry Ogunjobi in the foreseeable future.
