The concert Wednesday at UC San Diego celebrated the 150th year of the American composer's birth
The music of Charles Ives is the headwater of the American experimental music tradition.
The first and fifth movements are grandiloquent slow movements. The second and fourth are ragtime-infused scherzos. The third movement is a Largo whose rhythmically straightforward opening becomes entangled in cross rhythms and more elaborate textures. An American composer raised in an evangelical household once told me that you can’t really understand Ives if you don’t know the hymns that he quoted.
