April 4: Close relatives of journalist Maks Levin cry over his coffin during his funeral in Kyiv, Ukraine. Levin, who was a contributor to LB.ua and Reuters, went missing on March 13 and was found dead on April 1 near the village Huta Mezhyhirska, north of Kyiv. He is one of several journalists killed covering the war. April 3: Ukainian President Volodymyr Zelensky speaks to the press in the town of Bucha, northwest of the Ukrainian capital Kyiv.

March 17: Ukrainian firefighters extinguish a blaze at a warehouse after a bombing in Kyiv, Ukraine. Russian forces destroyed a theater in Mariupol where hundreds of people were sheltering and rained fire on other cities, Ukrainian authorities said, even as the two sides projected optimism over efforts to negotiate an end to the fighting.

March 7: Residents of Irpin flee heavy fighting via a destroyed bridge as Russian forces enter the city. By the end of March, the number of refugees from the war already had gone beyond the U.N.’s worst-case estimates, surpassing 4 million.
