Photographer Amanda Rivas has accused the cover artist of New York Times bestseller The Poet X by Elizabeth Acevedo of plagiarism. Rivas alleges that the cover created by artist Gabriel Moreno was based on a viral self-portrait of hers posted on Twitter.

bestselling 2018 HarperTeen young novelby Elizabeth Acevedo, of plagiarism. Responding to a now-deleted post on the Epic Reads website about the cover’s design, Rivas wrote, “The artist you talked about in this article committed plagiarism. This is not his original drawing. It is a photo manipulation/traced sketch of my image. Of my face. Please discredit him.” Rivas also, “Seeing my face on tote bags, on fan art, on peoples book reviews. Is so bittersweet.

Photographer Amanda Rivas claims the cover art of The Poet X by Elizabeth Acevedo plagiarized this self-portrait by her., “[W]e’re so incredibly sorry to hear that this happened. We’ve taken the article down, and are passing along all info to the HarperCollins design team. They’ll be in charge of next steps as we’re not included in that process[.]”, featured an interview between HarperTeen’s in-house designer, Erin Fitzsimmons, and the artist she hired to design the cover, Gabriel Moreno.

The issue in question arises over the image of the main character on the cover, which Rivas alleges is based on ashe took of herself. Via email, Rivas, 22, of Florida, told me she first came across the cover on June 30, when a friend sent it to her and said she thought it looked like her. “Prior to this, I had no knowledge of this book cover.”

Rivas detailed her conclusion that the artwork is based on her work. “At first I thought it was just a drawing that looked like me, since I get sent photos and illustrations all the time that ‘look like me.’ But when I stared at it more, I realized it had more than just a strong resemblance to me, it was my actual face. I realized it looked a lot like a self-portrait I took in 2015. I’m a certified photographer, I went to college for it, and I’m always taking self-portraits.
