Each week seems to bring another milestone in the new frontier of earning opportunities for college athletes.

started by longtime booster Brian Schottenstein and former OSU quarterback Cardale Jones. They declined to reveal the dollar amount raised Monday night. The sold-out event attracted nearly 300 ticket-buyers, per Schottenstein, at a cost of either $500 or $1,000 per seat.

Day created national headlines when he said at an event in May that he believed OSU needed $13 million annually in NIL income in order to keep its roster intact. Holtmann said he had not done the math but believes there are some pro-rated similarities with his smaller roster. The big-ticket items such as five-figure dining experiences at Jeff Ruby’s Steakhouse with football players help OSU close in on that figure Day dropped more rapidly. However, Monday’s event allowed fans such as the Dulas to contribute as well without those big-ticket purchases.

“Before NIL, social media made them more approachable,” Nutter said. “NIL has taken that one step further where if you want to pay, you can have that relationship.” Holtmann mentioned hearing stories of “big numbers,” at least some of which he believes were embellishments at best. Day said he hears similar reports and takes them back to Smith. The athletic department’s policy has already evolved in the first year of NIL income.
