The Philadelphia region might experience a snowy start to astronomical winter this weekend, with the coldest temperatures of the season predicted. While light rain or mixed precipitation is expected Friday, there's a possibility of snow accumulating late Friday night into Saturday morning. Temperatures are expected to hover near freezing during the solstice on Saturday, dropping into the teens by Sunday and remaining frigid throughout the week.

When the astronomical winter begins Saturday, it’s possible that the sun will rise over a snow cover in the Philly region on what will be by far the coldest weekend of the season. But on Thursday meteorologists cautioned that they weren’t quite sure what’s going to be falling. Or precisely when. Or how much.

The Christmas outlook remains another challenge, and it’s possible that the region could see a dash of that holiday favorite, the so-called wintry mix.How cold will it get this weekend in Philly? A storm approaching from the west is projected to transfer its energy to another storm a couple hundred miles off the coast. It’s also possible that a feature on the west side of that coastal low generates a narrow, heavier band of snow as the storm intensifies.
