Chris Wood says ‘it is hard to fathom’ the news that the PGA Tour, DP World Tour and LIV Golf are merging together to form ‘a new collectively owned’ entity 🎙️ GARSIDEK
Pelley addressed the media hours after Tuesday’s announcement but revealed little of the detail of the discussions that led to this new deal, how they emerged, where they took place, how the feuding parties suddenly became partners in a shared vision. This leaves plenty of room for speculation which troubled golfers kept entirely in the dark are inclined to fill.
The position of Monahan, the most vociferous and embittered critic of the Saudi incursion, is certainly under review in the golfing chat room. “There are calls for Jay to go, which I understand,” Wood said. “How on earth can people look this bloke in the eye and trust him, especially those who turned down millions from LIV to join their tour. You have to question the leadership of both tours.
“I have always backed Keith but it is so hard to understand at this early stage how this has come about given everything the leaders of our tours have said publicly. It’s not been any different privately. I watched the interview of Monahan last year throwing in the 9/11 thing [a reference to knowing bereaved families]. I don’t have the words to describe how we get from that position to where we are today.
“I’m not a businessman but from my perspective sat on a beach in Cornwall how can you possibly reference that, given the repercussions faced by the families who were affected by that 9/11 attack. I don’t care if this deal is about hundreds of millions of dollars. It’s about people’s lives. I think it is difficult to get past that now. From a human side it is hard to fathom.”
