Tonight could bring a celestial treat as the Perseids, potentially the strongest meteor shower of the year, is set to peak.
A one hour exposure from the East Rim of Steens Mountain shows stars rotating around the North Star. The picture was made from 1 a.m. until just after 2 am. In August of 2013.
Provided you have a clear sky, viewing conditions will be favorable this year with the moon setting around 11:30 p.m. local time,Meteor activity will pick up from then until dawn. From darker viewing locations, you may spot as many as 75 meteors per hour at the peak as they streak through the sky at speeds of up to 133,200 miles per hour.
The Perseids appear to originate from a place in the sky that rises in the northeast, so NASA recommends lying back and face roughly in that direction. Try to take in as much of the sky as you can in your view, as the meteors can appear all over.Typically one of the most vibrant and reliable meteor showers, the Perseids are created by the Earth passing through the debris trail of the Swift-Tuttle comet.
