Many hospitals are still facing the effects of the pandemic and are continuing to struggle to play catch up.
Years of unexpected PPE expenses and significant revenue losses from delayed or cancelled outpatient procedures paired with inflationary pressures, workforce shortages, and a never-ending pool of patients to care for have left our healthcare system breaking at the seams.
The time has come to take a long term perspective on this issue and bring balance back to the healthcare industry. The companies have the talent, motivation and expertise to do this if they choose to and the incentives are re-evaluated. For Pennsylvanians and Americans across the country, healthcare is becoming increasingly difficult to access and something must change. The closure ofacross the country since 2005 is one factor. But it is paired with affordability issues that are the result of a reluctance by some insurance companies to cover the basic cost of prescriptions and patient services.
Lowering the cost of health insurance to make sure every American can afford healthcare and ensuring our nation’s hospitals are paid a fair rate for providing patient treatment should be a top priority both for insurance companies as well as legislators and regulators in Harrisburg and Washington.
