April’s wagering activity still exceeded April 2023’s total handle, and in both retail and online sports betting in Pennsylvania.
The dog days of sports betting activity usually happen in the heat of the summer, but things start to wind down in the spring. That downturn hit Pennsylvania sports betting in April as the prolific legal gambling state booked a $646.1 million handle, the lowest of any month in 2024 so far. April’s full performance recently, and the final handle tally comes in at a 13% year-over-year increase compared to the $572.2 million from the same period last year, despite the month-over-month dip.
In total, $2.97 billion has been wagered so far in 2024, bringing in $270.9 million in revenue for Pennsylvania sportsbooks and $64 million in taxes for the state. is one of the most prolific in the entire industry, often trailing just New York, New Jersey, and Nevada for the biggest numbers. PA online sportsbooks earned $57.6 million in revenue in April, and retail sportsbooks in Pennsylvania generated $1.5 million.
There’s a pretty significant drop off in performance from the rest of the market, as FanDuel and DraftKings collected 72% of all online wagering activity in April.
