A bill to increase school bus safety was unanimously passed by the Pennsylvania Senate on Tuesday.Senate Bill 897 extends the stopping distance requirement to 15 feet before reaching a school bus when its red signal lights are flashing, and the side stop signal arm is activated.'Pennsylvania is one of only a few states with a mere 10-foot stopping distance,' said Sen. Lisa Baker, R-20, who sponsored the bill.

'Violators of school traffic laws are fundamentally guilty of one of two offenses – aggressive or distracted driving. Neither is defensible nor acceptable. Deaths and injuries are entirely preventable,' Baker said.The bill now heads to the House of Representatives.Pennsylvania's school bus stopping lawDrivers must stop at least 10 feet away from school buses that have their red lights flashing and stoparms extended.
