This is Penn State vs. Ohio State. And the 12-team CFP shouldn't diminish that — or what it means — at all.

This is Ohio State we’re talking about. This is the measuring stick. This is the team Penn State wants to beat so desperately. And the 12-team playoff shouldn’t change that.’s status have made some hesitant to get their hopes up. Maybe some, subconsciously, are telling themselves it doesn’t mean as much to lessen the heartbreak if another fourth-and-5 happens. Or, maybe the idea of being OK with losing to Ohio State is an unintended consequence of the CFP expanding.
In Jaylen Reed’s words, the Nittany Lions have a chance to “prove to the world” that they can beat Ohio State — that they can do what so many think they can’t. With a win over Ohio State — and assuming it beats Washington, Purdue, Minnesota and Maryland — Penn State would be on a collision course with Oregon in the Big Ten title game. Lose to Ohio State and that dream, barring chaos, is all but dead.
Where I’m sitting, it’s advantageous to make the Big Ten championship game. And as things stand, the most straightforward way to get there is by beating Ohio State.
