The General Counsel for the Texas House has sent letters to at least two prosecutors urging them to dismiss any doxing complaints they receive from Paxton.

House Impeachment mangers listen to the ballots be counted after Texas senators voted on articles of impeachment during day 10 of Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton’s impeachment trial in the Senate chamber at the Texas State Capitol in Austin on Saturday, Sept. 16, 2023. Paxton pleaded not guilty last week to numerous articles of impeachment.

He cited a new law that makes sharing someone’s address or phone number online “with the intent to cause harm or a threat of harm” illegal. It is meant to protect people from “doxing,” the practice of publicly posting someone’s personal information without their permission and with malicious intent. Cardwell argues the Board of Managers are not subject to the anti-doxing law because it exempts public servants performing their official duties. In her letter to prosecutors, she wrote that the law is unconstitutionally overbroad “and cannot be used to silence the House or House members,” adding that Paxton’s address was already posted online before last week and he “never objected.

On Thursday, a spokesperson for Tarrant County District Attorney Phil Sorrells confirmed he had received neither the House letter nor a complaint from Paxton. District attorneys in Dallas and Collin Counties, where two House managers live, did not return requests for comment.and noted the attorney general’s personal information is available elsewhere online.
