Passengers jump off suspected smuggling boat after it comes ashore in La Jolla [Breaking]
A group of people believed to be in the U.S. illegally jumped off a suspected smuggling boat abandoned in shallow water off the coast of La Jolla early Wednesday morning and ran to a nearby street, officials said.
San Diego lifeguards spotted a 20-foot boat dropping off what appeared to be eight individuals shortly before 8 a.m., said San Diego city spokesperson Jose Ysea. Lifeguards responded and determined everyone made it to shore safely and no rescues were needed, Ysea said. The people who got off the boat ran up past the Marine Room restaurant on Spindrift Drive. CBS 8 reported that at least three cars were waiting for the group.Border Patrol agents found 12 personal flotation devices on the abandoned boat, which was seized by the Air and Marine Operations arm of the agency. No arrests have been made and an investigation is ongoing, said a Customs and Border Protection spokesperson.suspected smuggling vessel capsized early Saturday.
In that incident, a panga-style boat thought to be carrying at least 10 people overturned in the water near Seacoast Drive and Cortez Avenue. Lifeguards and surfers pulled nine people to shore after the boat capsized around 6:10 a.m., including the two who died, officials said.
