Padres facing left-hander Ryan Weathers after trading him away to Marlins earlier this month
He was with Triple-A El Paso at the time of the trade. He came out of the bullpen in Arlington, Texas, four days later, allowing six runs in 3 2/3 innings. He was optioned to Triple-A Jacksonsville after that, striking out 15 against three walks and allowing opposing hitters a .179 average over two starts .
Weathers had a 4.20 ERA, 52 strikeouts against 24 walks and a .262 opponent average at Triple-A El Paso before the trade and has a 5.95 ERA in 146 2/3 innings in the majors since the Padres brought their 2018 first-rounder to the majors in 2021. Of course, his MLB debut in the postseason out of the bullpen the previous fall is well-documented, as is the Padres’ knowledge of their former No. 7 overall pick.“Sometimes you go to a different place and they tweak with some things and maybe your breakdown of pitches or whatever,” Padres managersaid. “But it’s a guy we’ve played behind, so we should know a little something about him.” and the guy the Padres got for Weathers in Cooper .
