Padres manager, fired in by Cardinals after 3 consecutive playoff appearances, is back in St. Louis to face former team

ST. LOUIS — As he does a few hours before most games, Padres manager Mike Shildt took several laps around the Busch Stadium warning track Monday afternoon.

“It’s good to come back,” Shildt said before the game. “A lot of people I wanted to see, a lot of good relationships. A lot of really good memories and people. It’s exciting to come back. But mostly it’s about the Padres coming in and playing good baseball.”Both sentiments can be true. Just as it can also be true Shildt might take some satisfaction in defeating the team that dismissed him on a Zoom call in what was to most a shocking move.

Shildt’s Cardinals teams made the playoffs each of his three full seasons, and his .559 winning percentage ranked seventh among the 228 men to have managed at least 300 games since 1950. Tony LaRussa, one of Shildt’s mentors and manager of the Cardinals from 1996-2011, has repeatedly expressed displeasure at how the team dispatched Shildt.
