Padres star enthusiastically recalls first World Baseball Classic experience; Josh Hader will get work, but Nick Martinez is the closer for now

Manny Machado has played in a World Series and is clearly doing all he can to get to another one with theTo date, there is nothing the six-time All-Star has done in baseball as enjoyable as playing for the Dominican Republic in the World Baseball Classic.Machado, who generally is not all that talkative before games, spent almost 10 minutes Monday afternoon before the Padres played the Giants at Oracle Park talking about his WBC experience in 2017 and why he loved it.

The ’23 WBC begins March 8 with games in the U.S. being played at Chase Field in Phoenix and loanDepot Park in Miami. The latter, which is Machado’s hometown and where he makes his offseason home, is where the Dominican Republic will play as long as it is alive in the tournament. The championship game is in Miami.

“We need to get him some regular work,” manager Bob Melvin said. “The stuff is there. You’re seeing 97 , 98. At times, a really crisp breaking ball. Just not putting it all together at the same time.” Martinez got the save by working a scoreless ninth inning Saturday in Kansas City. He is one of five relievers who brought a scoreless streak of at least eight games and 9 1/3 innings into Monday’s game.
