Left knee takes brunt of collision with wall but Juan Soto remains in game; Michael Wacha throwing, improving each day as he eyes Friday return to Padres rotation

“I’ve played catch a couple times now, and each day it’s definitely getting better,” Wacha said Sunday morning. “That’s a positive there. Excited about that. After the past couple starts, just wasn’t quite recovering the same. A little bit more sore in there and a little bit more tight, so just decided to tell someone and everyone thought it’d be smart to skip this start and prepare for week.Wacha’s right shoulder has sent him to the injured list in three of his last four seasons.
“It’s just one of those things where it can get kind of pissed off and irritated,” he said, “and sometimes you have to take a breather and get it right.”was optioned back to Triple-A El Paso to make room for the addition ofThe 26-year-old knuckleballer was not expecting a long stay in the majors as a one-off fill-in during Wacha’s absence.
Waldron yielded two home runs on Saturday on 92 mph fastballs. He threw only two knuckleballs over the first three innings before throwing 11 over his final 1 2/3 frames, none of them squared up as he mixed it in more against left-handed hitters
