As for who starts Sunday, Padres manager Mike Shildt said he the team was still working through that conversation, although a clue revealed itself as he addressed reporters on Friday afternoon: Pérez is back with Preller 17 years later as a depth starter. Acquired Tuesday from the Pirates for another teenaged pitcher, the 33-year-old Pérez carries a 5.20 ERA into Saturday’s Padres debut. He returned from a groin injury in late June and had an 8.24 ERA through his first four starts off the injured list before throwing six shutout innings against the Cardinals on July 24.
