But things like what happened last night do not have to be anything more than a blip.The closer in what might be the best bullpen in the major leagues blew a save last night. It was Robert Suarez’s fourth blown save of the season and third in his past 22 games.
Last night was the first time the Padres lost in the eight games in which they used some combination of Adam, Scott and Suarez.Many people around the league are saying the Padres have MLB’s strongest bullpen going into the postseason. They very well might. And it might be one of the biggest reasons to think they can make a run in October.
The Padres have been able to give Suarez breaks throughout the year to offset his being asked to protect four-run leads 10 times and get more than three outs nine times and pitch in 57 games in all. He has not gone longer than one inning since July 26, but he has protected a four-run lead as recently as Aug. 26.
The Padres hold the tiebreaker over the Braves by virtue of having won their season series. But the Mets took the season series from the Padres. Whoever wins the final series of the season will hold the tiebreaker between the Padres and Diamondbacks, as they have split their 10 games so far.
