Manny Machado, AJ Preller among those praising Padres Chairman Peter Seidler, who died in November at age 63
Peter Seidler’s Padres were spinning their wheels last summer. His spending had put a target on their back. Their bats were not living up to expectations. As the Chicago Cubs rolled into town last June, the Padres’ free-spirited owner — who signed off emails with peace signs and even “All Cool Here” taglines while twice battling and beating cancer — decided an unconventional approach was worth a whirl.
The Padres ended a 14-year playoff drought in the COVID-shortened 2020 season and upset the 111-win Dodgers two years later to forge just the franchise’s third National League Championship Series berth. Despite Seidler's sage, the Padres fell inexplicably short of the postseason in 2023.
