Padres not eyeing record just yet, as their definition of a quick start is not solely explained by victories
It is difficult to find a Padres player who knows the team’s record. “No idea,” Manny Machado said. Jurickson Profar, who speaks five languages, gave a quizzical look, as if the question had been asked in one of earth’s 7,000 or so languages in which he is not fluent. Fernando Tatis Jr. guessed correctly in relation to .500 but was off by a couple games. “What is it?” Xander Bogaerts said after a long few seconds of thinking.
They did that a total of six times all of 2024. They are batting .307 with runners in scoring position, ranking seventh in MLB after sitting in the bottom five virtually all last season. They are moving runners over with productive outs, putting the ball in play more than most teams, generally hitting the ball hard and — aside from some recent gaffes by arguably their best defender — playing dependable defense.
