A Sydney homeowner was surprised to discover over 100 red-bellied black snakes in his backyard mulch. Snake catchers removed the snakes, which included both pregnant adults and newborns. Experts are unsure why so many snakes gave birth in such a short time frame.

A man in Sydney, Australia, was startled to find over 100 venomous red-bellied black snakes in a pile of mulch in his backyard. David Stein noticed a few snakes slithering into the mulch and, after researching online, learned that pregnant red-bellied black snakes often gather together before giving birth. He contacted Reptile Relocation Sydney, and snake catcher Dylan Cooper arrived to remove the snakes. Stein helped rake away the mulch as Cooper collected 102 pregnant and newborn snakes.

Two of the adults even gave birth to a total of 29 snakes while Cooper was still working. Cory Kerewaro, the owner of Reptile Relocation Sydney, said this was the largest haul he'd ever seen in a similar snake removal job. Experts are unsure why so many snakes gave birth in such a short time frame at Stein's property. Some theories include the snakes congregating for safety or due to a lack of suitable birthing habitats. The unusually hot weather in Sydney could have also triggered the births. Kerewaro was given permission by government authorities to release the snakes, a protected species, into a national park. The snakes were released far from human interaction, ensuring their safety and minimizing any potential concerns about their presence. This incident serves as a reminder of the diverse wildlife that shares our environment and the importance of respecting and understanding their behavior
