Opinion: We need to vote for people first, not parties [Opinion]

Re “If lying is grounds for ouster, Santos won’t be alone” : George Santos’ “rampant fraudulence, while amusing, is not a threat to the republic.” So unbridled deceit by a partisan shill should be dismissed as “amusing” rather than denounced as a dangerous character flaw disqualifying a candidate from positions of public trust?

The article recapping Santo’s fabricated persona supports referral for ethics investigations, whereas bemused blogger Yglesias cynically advocates: “just leave well enough alone” lest the “cure” for lying, cheating and stealing elections be “worse than the disease” of moral cancer. Have we learned nothing?

Yglesias acknowledges Santos’ behavior is “both egregious and clear-cut,” and his “fibbing” is indeed “breathtaking [in the] scale and scope of the lying.” He then casually equates deliberate dishonesty with “normal rhetoric.” He blames gullible voters for electing Santos, whereas the enabling GOP, abandoning any pretense of integrity, endorsed and funded this charlatan to get his mindless House vote. Disgraceful. After retiring I took a part-time job as a clerk at our local city library.

Our employment was contingent on upholding that oath, treating patrons and colleagues with civility and respect and always displaying honesty and integrity. Based on the recent chaos in the GOP led House of Representatives, it seems members of Congress are not held accountable for living up to any of those standards or even trying to act other than in their own self interest. Why is that?
