San Diego: We have a problem. In the past year or so, we’ve seen many competitive colleges go back to requiring SAT or ACT scores. Some of the schools I’m talking about are: Harvard, Yale, Dartmouth, Stanford, Brown, MIT, Georgetown, Cornell, University of Texas-Austin and Caltech.
After a period of obfuscation, during which many colleges claimed that applicants who didn’t submit scores were on an equal footing with those who did, more of these colleges are admitting that applicants who submit scores are admitted at higher rates.Colleges have long realized students with high scores are more likely to succeed, and that rampant high school grade inflation often necessitates data from standardized tests.
But don’t these schools want to give motivated kids every opportunity to maximize their chances for admissions and college scholarships? Our disadvantaged students, in particular, can use test scores to get into better colleges and afford them through better financial aid. It’s a real shame many of them won’t be able to find a place to take a test.per student in tuition.
