Opinion: Support literacy for San Diego children this holiday season with these four ideas [Opinion]

The pandemic didn’t help. In California, third-grade student scores dropped by. Children who don’t read at grade level before leaving elementary school are likely to suffer a lifetime of disappointment due to low wages, unhappy career choices, forgotten dreams and a lack of access to resources that are more available to people with greater affluence and educational achievement.

At the San Diego Council on Literacy, with our 34 affiliated programs, we have a vision: literacy for all San Diego residents. Related to that vision are the following ways San Diego’s residents engage in literacy solutions: 2. Books mailed to local children’s homes. Currently, more than 400 children, under age 5, are receiving books in the mail each month through the council on literacy’s affiliation with Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library. For $25 per child per year, local donors are making book deliveries happen for children. You can donate to support a child through the council.

4. Volunteerism. Now that we can be more safely together again, let’s get back to donating our time and talents to those in need. Literacy programs need tutors for children and adults as well as volunteers to help with other literacy program efforts.
