," : During the height of the pandemic, some friends and I started a nonprofit to get basic needs items — food, hygiene and school supplies, as well as clothing — to HISD Title I schools that were struggling. We were working with many schools when Millard House II came on board as the new superintendent in the fall of 2021, and we have seen firsthand what a difference he has made.

The pandemic was hard on children in Houston. Many lost parents . Many suffered from lack of access to virtual learning. Many had parents who lost jobs. The over 180,000 children in our city who attend HISD schools, many of whom don’t have any other options, don’t need more upheaval and chaos in their school system right now.

," : As a Houstonian and an advocate for social justice, I was extremely pleased to read that navigation centers are being implemented in the city. These centers addressing the housing and transitional needs of individuals and families experiencing homelessness are a step in the right direction for Houston and the state of Texas.
