on Oct. 4 because of unstable conditions on about 700 feet of rail tracks just north of Camp Pendleton, some residents in Orange and San Diego counties may have wondered if the Amtrak passenger and Metrolink commuter rail service linking the counties would ever reopen. Experts have long warned rising sea levels linked to the climate emergency would sharply accelerate coastal erosion.

This week, those fears look premature — at least for now. On Thursday, it was announced that Amtrak will resume weekend passenger service between San Diego and Orange counties
