The 57-bed facility on Prospect Street in La Jolla was the creation of Ellen Browning Scripps. Next door that same year Miss Ellen created the Scripps Metabolic Clinic with the ambitious goal of conducting ground- breaking research and attracting patients from across the region and beyond.
Other hospitals were added as the years went by, including San Dieguito Hospital in 1978 ; Bay Hospital Medical Center in 1986 ; Green Hospital in 1991 ; and Mercy Hospital in 1995 . Scripps started the county’s first blood and marrow transplant program, was first in the U.S. applying genotyping to improve heart care and helped create San Diego County’s trauma system.
