Opinion: San Diego needs to think about its future with and without cars [Opinion]

There have been some recent commentaries promoting mass transit and bicycle transportation. I support this, but not everyone has the ability to do that. I used to be a cyclist. I have 58,000 miles under my tires, and I commuted by bicycle to work in Midwest winters in below-zero temperatures and on ice and snow.

I can no longer ride because I am handicapped. I no longer have the ability to walk to the nearest bus stop four blocks away. What really scares me are the misguided ideas that will make driving more difficult for those of us who need to do so. There are planning ideas of overbuilding neighborhoods, limiting travel lanes and parking, and charging us 4 cents per mile to drive. I implore our elected officials and planners to keep in mind the needs of us who must drive.
