That’s what happened to Brenda Bautista Zirangoa, a 44-year-old Purépecha indigenous undocumented mother of three sons, who is an entrepreneur earning a living teaching her community about healthy eating. But when the January storms came and flooded her home in San Diego, her cooking equipment, which is crucial to her small business, was destroyed.

The rising costs of food and everyday living have worsened hardships across the state, particularly among unhoused and underpaid undocumented immigrants. San Diego families are experiencing the painful consequences of lower paychecks and higher prices for housing, gas and food. Ashows that for a single adult working the minimum wage with one child, housing is unaffordable in almost every California county, especially San Diego.

To effectively address increasing food insecurity, poverty and homelessness, California must eliminate anti-immigrant exclusions within CalFresh. We can bring equity to our state’s food safety net by making Food4All a reality.
