Thirty-six years ago, the World Health Organization declared Dec. 1 as World AIDS Day, creating an international day of awareness for those living with HIV and AIDS. For us, every Dec. 1 is a call to action for our community to remain steadfast in ending the epidemic; it is a remembrance for all those who have lost their lives; and a recognition of those who continue to manage and live healthily with HIV.

. In addition to these medical advances, there has been a greater recognition of the importance of proper nutrition in health outcomes for people living with HIV. At Mama’s Kitchen, we’ve been doing this work since the height of the AIDS epidemic in 1990. We have developed a medically sound dietary and nutrition education program that has earned accreditation from the, signifying that our high-quality services consistently meet the needs of individuals with chronic health conditions.

For many of our clients, the stigma of living with HIV/AIDS is still being felt, despite all of the progress that has been realized in other aspects of this epidemic. We continue to hear from clients about feelings of isolation and the impact that receiving Mama’s Kitchen’s services has had on their lives. When clients receive a medically tailored meal, they’re reminded they’re loved, cared for and a part of a community.
