Opinion: If the economy slows, how will Trump spin it?

President Trump speaks during a ceremony at the White House on Wednesday. By Paul Waldman Paul Waldman Opinion writer covering politics Email Bio Follow Opinion writer March 28 at 3:15 PM President Trump is never one to shy away from gilding the lily — or gilding the lily, surrounding the lily with gaudy, gold-colored Louis XIV furniture, and then insisting that everyone is saying it’s the most spectacular lily in the world.

Trump has been touting 3.1 percent economic growth in 2018. But officially, the Commerce Department said Thursday, the economy grew 2.9 percent last year. Seriously: Try to picture Trump in 2020 saying, as many incumbents do, “We’ve made a lot of progress but we have more work to do, and here’s where I want to go next.” He just doesn’t have it in him. He’s going to say it’s phenomenal, no matter what the truth is.

But Trump had only 31 lots zoned and ready for sale at the course, according to city records. He claimed credit for 24 lots — and at least $72 million in future revenue — he didn’t have. He could declare multiple bankruptcies, and find other banks to lend him money . He could steal people’s life savings with cons like Trump University, but they were little people, and there were plenty more where they came from.
